Economic inequality negatively impacts individuals' physical and psychological well-being. The tax system serves as a crucial lever to counteract this through resource redistribution and more equitable access to services. Although taxes rarely enjoy widespread popular—or at times even political—favor, they are fundamental to building a civil society capable of managing its diversity and maximizing collective well-being.
The guidelines proposed here set out effective communication strategies to promote voluntary tax compliance. Understanding the audience and using clear, tailored language tailored to their characteristics are central to the success of these strategies. Trust in the source of the message and the engagement of taxpayers and their values are crucial for securing commitment and active participation in the tax process. Upholding these principles makes tax communication more transparent and accessible, thereby enhancing its fairness.
These guidelines are the outcome of a research project funded by the Cariparo Foundation and are grounded in scientific research across psychology, behavioral economics, and communication studies. This research provides effective tools to promote voluntary and responsible tax compliance, ultimately contributing to the creation of a more equitable and inclusive society.
