Tornato a Padova per studiare legge, nel 1853 il ventunenne Nievo scrivo al foglio bresciano «La Sferza» per difendere gli studenti del Bo, accusati dal direttore Mazzoldi di preferire i piaceri della socialità a quelli dello studio, e lo fa rivendicando i diritti di una gioventù in cui ferve «la parte viva e pensante della nazione».

Having returned to Padua to study law, in 1853 the twenty-one-year-old Nievo wrote to the Brescian newspaper La Sferza to defend the students of Palazzo del Bo, who had been accused by its director Mazzoldi of preferring the pleasures of socializing to those of study. He did so by reclaiming the rights of a youth in which 'the living and thinking part of the nation' burns with fervor.
